A Global Beacon of Hope: The #LightUpMBC Campaign Targets Metastatic Breast Cancer

NEW YORK, NY — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, the familiar sea of pink ribbons often dominates the public consciousness, frequently centering on themes of early detection, screening, and successful recovery. However, for those living with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the narrative is often starkly different. On October 13, National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the nonprofit organization METAvivor Research and Support will once again attempt to shift the focus from awareness to urgent, actionable change.

Through the #LightUpMBC campaign, more than 325 landmarks across the United States, 20 countries, and 195 cities will be bathed in the signature teal, green, and pink lights of the MBC movement. This massive, synchronized illumination serves as a poignant reminder that while many celebrate the “survivorship” of early-stage breast cancer, thousands are engaged in a daily, ongoing battle against a disease that remains incurable.

The Reality of Stage 4: What is Metastatic Breast Cancer?

To understand the mission of #LightUpMBC, one must first confront the medical reality of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer is the spread of cancer from the breast to other distant parts of the body, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. Crucially, even when the cancer moves to another organ, it is still classified as breast cancer—not lung or bone cancer—and it remains stage 4.

For many, this diagnosis is a lifelong reality. Some patients receive a Stage 4 diagnosis at the very outset, while others may live for years or even decades after treatment for early-stage breast cancer, only for the disease to return in a metastatic form.

Unlike early-stage diagnoses, where treatment is typically intended to be curative, the treatment for MBC is perpetual. Even when medical scans show "no evidence of disease," it is rarely, if ever, a permanent state. Patients must remain on systemic therapies to keep the cancer under control. Because tumors often develop resistance to these therapies over time, patients are forced into a revolving cycle of new medications, infusions, and treatments.

The statistics are sobering: in the United States alone, an estimated 42,670 people are projected to die from breast cancer in 2026. That averages to approximately 117 lives lost every single day. These numbers underscore why organizations like METAvivor argue that research is not merely a priority—it is the only path toward changing these grim outcomes.

A Chronology of Advocacy: From One Bridge to Global Influence

The #LightUpMBC movement did not begin as a global phenomenon; it started with a single, deeply personal mission.

2017: The Spark

The movement traces its roots to New Hampshire, where the Portsmouth Memorial Bridge became the first landmark in history to illuminate in the colors of metastatic breast cancer awareness. The initiative was driven by a desire to bring visibility to a community that felt largely invisible in the broader breast cancer conversation.

The Foundation of a Legacy

The movement gained significant momentum through the vision of Laura Inahara, who founded the campaign in memory of her best friend, Jessica Moore. Moore, who lost her life to the disease at just 36 years old, had originally hoped to see one local landmark lit up in support of the cause. Following her death, that singular dream blossomed into a crusade that has since raised over $2.7 million for critical Stage 4 research.

2026: A Global Standard

Today, the reach of #LightUpMBC is unparalleled. The 2026 campaign includes some of the most recognizable structures in the world, including:

  • One World Trade Center (New York, NY)
  • Willis Tower (Chicago, IL)
  • Philadelphia City Hall (Philadelphia, PA)
  • Niagara Falls (Canada/U.S. border)
  • Ness Bridge (Inverness, Scotland)
  • Mactan-Cebu Airport (Philippines)

Scientific Rigor: How METAvivor Directs Funds

What separates METAvivor from many other cancer-focused organizations is its exclusive focus on Stage 4 disease. While many foundations fund general breast cancer research—much of which is directed toward prevention or early-stage screening—METAvivor acts as a dedicated lifeline for the metastatic community.

The organization employs a rigorous, two-tiered review process for its grant funding. Each project is evaluated by both scientific peers and a panel of patient advocates. This ensures that the research funded is not only scientifically sound but also directly relevant to the quality of life and survival outcomes of patients living with the disease.

Dr. Kelly Shanahan, Board President of METAvivor, offers a personal perspective on this importance. Diagnosed with MBC in 2013, she admits that she never anticipated surviving for 13 years. “My hope and the hope of so many others lies in research,” Dr. Shanahan states. “METAvivor-funded research is increasingly important these days. #LightUpMBC is the biggest contributor to this research, and it is also a way to bring us together as a community.”

LightUpMBC Live: A Multimedia Call to Action

The climax of the awareness day is the #LightUpMBC Live broadcast. Scheduled for October 13 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT), the event serves as a hub for the community to gather, learn, and contribute.

Hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling—who has been living with metastatic breast cancer for 11 years—and Broadway performer and breast cancer survivor Kara Lindsay, the stream is designed to be as informative as it is emotional. The program will feature:

  • Patient Stories: Real-time updates and narratives shared from the sites of the illuminated landmarks.
  • Scientific Insights: Experts discussing the latest breakthroughs in MBC treatment and the hurdles still faced by researchers.
  • Musical Performances: A star-studded lineup including two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Tony Award nominee Dorian Harewood, actress Christina Bianco, songwriter Cassandra Kubinski, and legendary voice artist Tony Daniels.

The event will be streamed for free on the METAvivor YouTube channel and Facebook Live, with additional support from the platform LiveOne.

Implications: The Quest to Transform the Disease

The ultimate goal of the #LightUpMBC campaign is ambitious: to transform metastatic breast cancer from a terminal condition into a chronic, manageable, and survivable disease.

The societal implications of this research are vast. Currently, the "terminal" nature of an MBC diagnosis places an immense psychological, financial, and physical burden on patients and their families. By funding research that extends life and preserves the quality of that life, METAvivor is essentially buying time for patients—time that is often used to see children grow up, to reach milestones, and to wait for the next generation of life-saving therapies.

The campaign also serves an educational purpose. By encouraging the public to photograph these landmarks and share them on social media with the tags #LightUpMBC and #METAvivor, the organization aims to correct the common misconceptions surrounding breast cancer. Many people remain unaware that 20–30% of early-stage breast cancer patients will eventually develop metastatic disease. By bringing this reality into the light, the campaign hopes to secure broader public support and increased funding for the specific research required to address this stage of the disease.

How to Get Involved

The organizers of #LightUpMBC emphasize that every individual has the power to contribute to the mission.

  1. Participate in the Awareness Day: On October 13, engage with the social media campaign by tagging @LightUpMBC. Sharing images of local participating landmarks helps amplify the message globally.
  2. Tune in to the Broadcast: By watching #LightUpMBC Live, viewers become part of the community of advocates, gaining access to the latest information on the disease and the research efforts being made to fight it.
  3. Donate: Because METAvivor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, every dollar of net proceeds from the campaign is funneled directly into research grants. Contributions can be made via www.lightupmbc.org.

As the sun sets on October 13, the sight of hundreds of landmarks glowing in teal, green, and pink will stand as more than just a public spectacle. It will be a powerful testament to the resilience of the patients, the dedication of the researchers, and the unwavering commitment of a community determined to see a future where a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis is no longer a terminal one.
