Turning the Night Teal, Green, and Pink: The Global Fight Against Metastatic Breast Cancer

NEW YORK, NY — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds across the globe, the familiar sea of pink ribbons often dominates the public consciousness. However, for a specific and underserved segment of the patient population, the narrative of "early detection" and "survivability" can feel alienating. On October 13, National Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Awareness Day, a global movement is working to shift the focus toward the reality of Stage 4 disease. Through the #LightUpMBC campaign, more than 325 landmarks spanning 20 countries will bathe in the colors of teal, green, and pink, serving as a beacon of urgency for the research needed to turn a terminal diagnosis into a manageable, long-term condition.

The Reality of Stage 4: More Than Just a Diagnosis

Metastatic breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the primary site in the breast to distant organs, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. Crucially, it remains breast cancer regardless of where it resides in the body. While the medical community often speaks of "remission" or "curing" early-stage breast cancer, MBC presents a different, more daunting trajectory.

For the millions living with Stage 4, there is no finish line. Treatment is a lifelong commitment, a continuous cycle of fighting to control the disease, extending life, and maintaining quality of life. Even when medical imaging shows "no evidence of disease," patients remain under constant monitoring. As cancer cells often develop resistance to therapies, patients must frequently navigate the physical and emotional toll of switching medications.

The statistics are sobering. In the United States alone, approximately 42,670 people are projected to lose their lives to breast cancer in 2026—a harrowing average of 117 deaths every single day. These are not merely statistics; they are mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends, whose lives are cut short by a disease that currently has no cure.

Chronology of a Movement: From One Landmark to a Global Phenomenon

The #LightUpMBC campaign did not begin in a corporate boardroom, but in the heart of a friendship. The initiative was founded by Laura Inahara, whose best friend, Jessica Moore, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 36.

Jessica’s original vision was modest: she simply hoped to see one local landmark illuminated to bring visibility to a disease that often feels ignored in the broader cancer awareness conversation. Though Jessica passed away, her legacy ignited a global firestorm of advocacy.

  • 2017: The movement saw its first milestone when the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, became the first landmark to light up in honor of MBC.
  • 2026 (Present Day): The campaign has grown exponentially. It now encompasses over 325 landmarks in all 50 U.S. states, 195 cities, and 20 countries. Iconic structures, including the One World Trade Center in New York City, the Willis Tower in Chicago, Philadelphia City Hall, Niagara Falls, the Ness Bridge in Scotland, and the Mactan-Cebu Airport in the Philippines, will stand in solidarity this October.
  • Fundraising Impact: To date, the initiative has raised over $2.7 million, with every dollar of net proceeds funneled directly into research grants through METAvivor.

Supporting Data and the Critical Role of Research

The urgency behind #LightUpMBC stems from a critical funding gap. Historically, the vast majority of breast cancer research funding has been directed toward screening, early detection, and primary treatment. While these are vital, they offer little solace to those who are already living with metastatic disease.

METAvivor Research and Support, the organization spearheading this effort, serves as a unique entity in the oncology landscape. It is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit that exclusively funds Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer research. The organization employs a rigorous, dual-layered review process for its grants, involving both scientific experts and patient advocates. This ensures that the research funded is not only scientifically sound but also directly relevant to the quality-of-life concerns of the patient community.

"My hope and the hope of so many others lies in research," says Dr. Kelly Shanahan, Board President of METAvivor. Diagnosed with MBC in 2013, Dr. Shanahan’s own journey has defied initial clinical expectations. "When I was diagnosed, I certainly didn’t think I’d still be here 13 years later. METAvivor-funded research is increasingly important these days. #LightUpMBC is the biggest contributor to this research, and is also a way to bring us together as a community."

Official Perspectives: The Voices Behind the Lights

The #LightUpMBC Live broadcast, airing at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on October 13, serves as the centerpiece of the campaign. Hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling—who has lived with MBC for 11 years—and Broadway performer/breast cancer survivor Kara Lindsay, the event aims to bridge the gap between clinical data and the human experience.

The broadcast will feature:

  • Patient Narratives: Real-time stories shared from the illuminated landmarks, grounding the global effort in individual experiences.
  • Scientific Insights: Experts discussing the latest developments in systemic therapies and the pipeline for new treatments.
  • Artistic Tribute: Musical performances from industry luminaries, including two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Tony nominee Dorian Harewood, actress Christina Bianco, singer-songwriter Cassandra Kubinski, and legendary voiceover artist Tony Daniels.

The broadcast will be available for free via the METAvivor YouTube channel, Facebook Live, and the LiveOne platform.

Implications: Moving from Awareness to Action

The implications of #LightUpMBC extend far beyond a single night of illumination. By transforming public spaces into symbols of solidarity, the campaign forces a conversation that many are uncomfortable having: the reality of living with a terminal, chronic condition.

The movement empowers patients to take control of their own advocacy. By encouraging the public to photograph these landmarks and share them on social media using the hashtags #LightUpMBC and #METAvivor, the campaign creates a digital ripple effect that raises global awareness and drives individual donations.

For the families affected by MBC, the campaign is an act of reclaiming space. It tells them that they are not invisible, that their struggle is acknowledged, and that there is a tangible path forward. Every dollar raised through the campaign moves the scientific community closer to the day when Stage 4 breast cancer is no longer a terminal diagnosis, but a survivable one.

As the sun sets on October 13, the glowing landmarks across the globe will serve as more than just a colorful display. They will stand as a testament to human resilience and a demand for the scientific investment required to change the course of history for the millions living with metastatic breast cancer.
