Turning Darkness Into Hope: The Global Movement to Illuminate Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness

NEW YORK, NY — October 8, 2026 — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds across the globe, the public discourse is often dominated by narratives of early detection, survivorship, and the completion of treatment. Yet, for a significant and often overlooked segment of the patient population, these messages mask a more complex reality. For those living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC)—also known as Stage 4—there is no "finishing" treatment. There is no cure.

On October 13, National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the nonprofit organization METAvivor Research and Support is spearheading a massive global initiative, #LightUpMBC, to bring these hidden realities into the spotlight. By illuminating more than 325 landmarks across 20 countries in the signature colors of teal, green, and pink, the organization aims to transition public awareness into tangible, life-saving action.

The Core Mission: Transforming Terminality into Survivability

Metastatic breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the primary site in the breast to distant organs, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. While it is categorized as Stage 4, it remains biologically defined as breast cancer. The diagnosis trajectory varies wildly: some patients are identified at Stage 4 from their initial consultation, while others experience a recurrence months, years, or even decades after their initial diagnosis and treatment.

The reality for these patients is a perpetual cycle of medical intervention. Even when modern imaging techniques show "no evidence of disease," it does not signify a cure. Rather, the goal of current medical protocols is to control the spread, extend life, and preserve the quality of life for as long as possible. As tumors inevitably develop resistance to existing therapies, patients must continually pivot to new, experimental, or secondary treatments.

The urgency of this mission is underscored by sobering statistics. In the United States alone, an estimated 42,670 people are projected to die from breast cancer in 2026. This equates to approximately 117 lives lost every single day. METAvivor exists to disrupt this trajectory, serving as the only national organization in the U.S. that exclusively funds Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer research. By utilizing a rigorous, dual-layered review process involving both scientific experts and patient advocates, the organization ensures that every dollar raised is directed toward research that has the highest potential to transform MBC from a terminal diagnosis into a manageable, chronic, and survivable condition.

A Chronology of Advocacy: From One Landmark to a Global Beacon

The journey of #LightUpMBC is a testament to the power of personal grief transformed into systemic change. The campaign was founded by Laura Inahara, who was driven by the loss of her best friend, Jessica Moore.

  • 2017: The movement began with a singular, humble ambition: to illuminate one local landmark to honor Jessica, who passed away at the age of 36. That first light was cast on the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
  • 2018–2024: The campaign expanded rapidly, fueled by a grassroots movement of patients and families who saw the power of visual advocacy. What started as a local tribute grew into a national, then international, phenomenon, drawing in major structures and city councils.
  • 2026: The current campaign marks a milestone, with over 325 landmarks—including iconic sites like New York’s One World Trade Center, the Willis Tower in Chicago, Philadelphia City Hall, Niagara Falls, and the Mactan-Cebu Airport in the Philippines—participating.

The growth of this initiative has not just been geographical; it has been financial. To date, the #LightUpMBC movement has raised over $2.7 million for critical research, proving that when a community unites, it can move the needle on medical progress.

Scientific and Personal Perspectives: The Voices Behind the Light

The #LightUpMBC initiative is more than a lighting display; it is a platform for the voices of those currently navigating the complexities of the disease. Dr. Kelly Shanahan, Board President of METAvivor, offers a perspective grounded in both medical expertise and personal experience.

"When I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2013, I certainly didn’t think I’d still be here 13 years later," Dr. Shanahan remarked. "My hope and the hope of so many others lies in research. METAvivor-funded research is increasingly important these days. #LightUpMBC is the biggest contributor to this research, and it is also a powerful way to bring us together as a community."

This sense of community is the cornerstone of the #LightUpMBC Live event. The broadcast, scheduled for October 13 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, is designed to be an immersive experience. Hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling—a veteran advocate who has lived with MBC for 11 years—and Broadway performer and breast cancer survivor Kara Lindsay, the program promises a blend of advocacy and art.

The production will feature:

  • Patient Stories: Live testimonials from individuals standing in front of illuminated landmarks across the globe, sharing the personal side of the statistics.
  • Scientific Briefs: Experts will explain the current landscape of MBC research and why funding specific, high-risk, high-reward projects is the key to future breakthroughs.
  • Musical Performances: The evening will be punctuated by performances from two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Tony Award nominee Dorian Harewood, actress Christina Bianco, singer-songwriter Cassandra Kubinski, and renowned voiceover artist Tony Daniels.

Supporting Data and The Urgency of Investment

The reliance on research funding cannot be overstated. According to national health data, the vast majority of breast cancer funding is currently allocated toward early detection and prevention. While these are critical public health goals, they leave a void for the approximately 150,000 to 250,000 Americans currently living with metastatic breast cancer.

METAvivor’s model of "patient-led" research funding ensures that the projects they support address the specific challenges that matter most to patients: overcoming drug resistance, preventing metastasis to the brain, and minimizing the toxicity of long-term treatments. The 2026 campaign is particularly focused on closing the funding gap, as the cost of clinical trials and molecular research continues to rise alongside the complexity of the disease.

"Jessica hoped to illuminate one local landmark," says Laura Inahara. "Today, her legacy helps families around the world shine a light for the people they love, teaches patients with MBC how to advocate for themselves, and funds the very science that will one day provide the answers we are all praying for."

The Path Forward: How the Public Can Engage

As October 13 approaches, the organizers are inviting the public to participate in the "movement of light." The engagement strategy is twofold: digital visibility and direct support.

  1. Social Amplification: Members of the public are encouraged to visit their local participating landmarks, capture images, and share them on social media using the hashtags #LightUpMBC and #METAvivor. By tagging @LightUpMBC, participants contribute to a digital "wave" of awareness that ensures the conversation extends beyond local communities.
  2. Direct Contribution: One hundred percent of net proceeds from the campaign and the live stream will go directly to the METAvivor research grant program. Donations can be made via www.lightupmbc.org, where a full map of participating global landmarks is also available.
  3. Educational Participation: The livestream serves as an entry point for those unfamiliar with the complexities of Stage 4 disease. Viewers can tune in for free via the METAvivor YouTube channel, METAvivor Facebook Live, or through LiveOne.

Implications for the Future of Cancer Care

The #LightUpMBC movement serves as a stark reminder that progress in oncology is not solely the result of pharmaceutical innovation; it is the result of public will. By bringing the reality of metastatic breast cancer into the public square, METAvivor is challenging the stigma and the "terminal" label associated with the disease.

When the lights go out on October 13, the impact will be measured in more than just dollars raised. It will be measured in the increased capacity for patients to self-advocate, the heightened awareness among the general public regarding the realities of Stage 4 disease, and the sustained commitment of the scientific community to tackle the most difficult questions in cancer biology.

As the world turns its gaze toward the teal, green, and pink horizons of these 325 landmarks, the message is clear: for those living with metastatic breast cancer, the fight is constant, the need is urgent, and the hope is anchored in the collective action of a global community.
