Turning Awareness into Action: The Global Mission to Illuminate the Reality of Metastatic Breast Cancer

NEW YORK, NY — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month blankets the world in familiar shades of pink, a critical distinction often gets lost in the broader conversation: the difference between early-stage detection and the terminal reality of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). On October 13, National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the nonprofit organization METAvivor is spearheading a global movement to shift the narrative. Through the #LightUpMBC campaign, more than 325 iconic landmarks across 20 countries will be bathed in the colors of teal, green, and pink—the symbolic colors of MBC—to honor those lost to the disease, support those currently navigating its complexities, and, most importantly, fund the scientific research necessary to save lives.

The Critical Reality: Understanding Stage 4 Breast Cancer

Metastatic breast cancer, or Stage 4 breast cancer, occurs when cancer cells spread from the original site in the breast to distant organs, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. It is vital to understand that even when the disease is found in other organs, it remains classified as breast cancer.

For the thousands of individuals living with MBC, the diagnosis is not a "finish line" to be crossed, but a life-long journey of ongoing treatment. Unlike early-stage breast cancer, which may be treated with the hope of a cure, MBC is currently incurable. Treatment protocols are designed to control the progression of the disease, extend life, and preserve the patient’s quality of life. However, because cancer cells are adept at mutating and becoming resistant to various therapies, patients must frequently pivot between treatments, facing the physical and emotional toll of a chronic, life-threatening condition.

The statistics are sobering. In the United States alone, an estimated 42,670 people are expected to die from breast cancer in 2026. This equates to approximately 117 lives lost every single day. These numbers underscore the urgent, non-negotiable need for increased funding toward innovative research.

A Chronology of Advocacy and Illumination

The #LightUpMBC movement began with a singular, deeply personal vision. The campaign was founded by Laura Inahara as a tribute to her best friend, Jessica Moore, who tragically lost her battle with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 36.

  • 2017: The movement finds its footing when the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, becomes the first landmark to illuminate in honor of those with MBC.
  • 2020–2025: The campaign scales rapidly, evolving from a local tribute into a massive, multi-continental demonstration of solidarity. By connecting with local municipalities and facility managers, the campaign successfully convinces hundreds of major landmarks to join the cause annually.
  • 2026: This year marks a significant milestone, with participation expanding to over 325 landmarks across all 50 U.S. states and 195 cities globally. From the heights of One World Trade Center in New York City and the Willis Tower in Chicago to the international waters of Niagara Falls and the historic Ness Bridge in Scotland, the "Light Up" effect has become a powerful visual testament to a community that refuses to be silenced.

Supporting Data and the Impact of METAvivor

METAvivor holds a unique position within the oncology landscape. It is one of the only organizations that exclusively funds Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer research. Recognizing that the vast majority of cancer research funding is directed toward early-stage disease and prevention, METAvivor fills a life-saving gap.

The organization employs a rigorous, two-tier review process to select the projects it funds. Each proposal is evaluated by a panel of scientific experts as well as patient advocates who are living with the disease. This ensures that the research is not only scientifically sound but also clinically relevant to the daily lived experience of patients.

To date, the #LightUpMBC campaign alone has raised over $2.7 million. Every dollar raised through this initiative is earmarked for research grants, providing scientists with the resources needed to explore new therapeutic avenues, such as immunotherapy, targeted drug delivery, and treatments for therapy-resistant tumors. The goal is clear: to transform metastatic breast cancer from a terminal diagnosis into a manageable, survivable chronic condition.

Official Voices: Perspectives from the Frontline

The leadership at METAvivor and the organizers of #LightUpMBC emphasize that the movement is as much about community as it is about science.

Dr. Kelly Shanahan, Board President of METAvivor, speaks from the vantage point of a patient living with the disease. Diagnosed in 2013, she admits that her own survival has exceeded initial projections, a fact she attributes directly to the evolution of research. "When I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2013, I certainly didn’t think I’d still be here 13 years later," Dr. Shanahan remarked. "My hope and the hope of so many others lies in research, and METAvivor-funded research is increasingly important these days. #LightUpMBC is the biggest contributor to this research, and is also a way to bring us together as a community."

Laura Inahara, the founder of the campaign, views the growth of the project as a fulfillment of her friend Jessica’s original hope. "Jessica hoped to illuminate one local landmark," Inahara shared. "Today, her legacy helps families around the world shine a light for the people they love, teaches patients with MBC how to advocate for themselves, and has now raised millions for critical research."

The #LightUpMBC Live Event: A Global Convergence

The centerpiece of the awareness day is the #LightUpMBC Live broadcast, a free, high-production virtual event scheduled for October 13 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

Hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling—who has navigated her own journey with MBC for 11 years—and Broadway performer and breast cancer survivor Kara Lindsay, the event serves as an educational and emotional bridge. The broadcast will be available on the METAvivor YouTube channel, Facebook Live, and via the streaming platform LiveOne.

The program promises a poignant blend of:

  • Patient Stories: Personal accounts shared live from various illuminated landmarks, highlighting the diverse faces and ages impacted by the disease.
  • Scientific Insight: Expert commentary on the latest breakthroughs in MBC research, breaking down complex developments for a general audience.
  • Musical Performances: A series of high-caliber performances featuring two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Tony Award nominee Dorian Harewood, actress Christina Bianco, singer-songwriter Cassandra Kubinski, and voiceover legend Tony Daniels.

The Broader Implications: Moving Toward a Future Without MBC

The implications of the #LightUpMBC campaign extend far beyond the single night of illumination. By forcing a global conversation about the realities of Stage 4 cancer, the campaign challenges the public perception that "early detection" is a universal solution for breast cancer. It demands that funding agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and the general public acknowledge that those living with metastatic disease require specific, targeted, and persistent support.

The campaign invites the public to engage actively. Supporters are encouraged to photograph participating landmarks and share them on social media using the hashtags #LightUpMBC and #METAvivor. This digital footprint serves as a beacon, ensuring that the advocacy of October 13 continues to ripple through public discourse long after the lights are turned off.

For those looking to support the mission, 100% of the net proceeds from the campaign go directly to research. Whether through donating, participating in the live stream, or simply spreading the word, the initiative provides a tangible way for the public to turn awareness into actionable change.

As the landmarks go dark on the morning of October 14, the work of METAvivor will continue. The research funded by these efforts will proceed in labs, the advocacy will continue in legislative halls, and the community will continue to support one another in the face of uncertainty. The light, both physical and metaphorical, serves as a reminder: until a cure is found, the fight for life, time, and quality remains the highest priority.
