Just as it took decades of mounting evidence and consistent advocacy to change public perception and legislation regarding cigarettes, the authors suggest that the food industry’s current priorities—profit, shelf stability, and aggressive marketing—are fundamentally misaligned with the nutritional needs of the American public. The study posits that a similar, long-term trajectory of policy change may be necessary to curb the influence of UPFs in the national diet.

The Scale of the Crisis

The urgency of this issue is reflected in the raw numbers provided by global health organizations. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 333,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States in 2026, with over 36,000 deaths expected. Globally, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reported nearly 1.5 million new diagnoses and 400,000 deaths in 2022.

If even a fraction of these cases can be traced to the consumption of ultra-processed foods, the public health potential of dietary intervention is staggering. By moving away from hyper-palatable, nutrient-poor, industrially manufactured products and toward whole, minimally processed foods, the medical community believes we may be able to significantly reduce the incidence of one of the most common and deadliest cancers among men.
