The Battle for the Life Sciences Cloud: Salesforce and Veeva Square Off Over Agentic AI

The landscape of life sciences software is undergoing a seismic shift. As the industry moves beyond traditional cloud-based CRM systems, a new "agentic" frontier has emerged, promising to automate everything from clinical trial management to commercial engagement. At the center of this transformation are two titans: Salesforce, the CRM giant, and Veeva Systems, the industry-specific software powerhouse.

During the recent Veeva Commercial Summit in Boston, Salesforce made a bold power play, announcing that its "Agentforce Life Sciences" platform has already secured over 140 enterprise clients. Among these are some of the most prominent names in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, including Novartis, AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Merck Animal Health. The announcement serves as a clear signal that the battle for the future of pharma tech is no longer just about data storage—it is about which company can best harness the power of autonomous AI agents.

The Dawn of the Agentic Era

The term "agentic AI" refers to software systems capable of performing complex tasks with minimal human intervention. Unlike traditional generative AI that merely answers prompts, these agents act as "digital labor," executing workflows, managing patient engagement, and coordinating medical outreach.

"The 140 clients represent customers across our entire portfolio," explained Joe Ferraro, SVP and GM of Life Sciences at Salesforce. "Regardless of whether they are using it for patient, clinical, commercial, or medical engagement, the demand for agentic capabilities is universal."

For Veeva, the challenge is existential. Peter Gassner, CEO of Veeva, acknowledged the shift during his keynote at the summit: "The Agentic Commercial model changes everything about how we approach commercialization." For Veeva, this transition encompasses everything from non-personal digital promotion to the granular complexities of content creation and regulatory approval.

Chronology: A Decade of AI Evolution

The current race to "agentic" dominance is the culmination of years of strategic positioning.

Salesforce lands 140 life sciences clients, pitches ‘headless’ AI to pharma
  • 2014-2016 (The Foundation): Salesforce began its pivot to an "AI-first" company under Marc Benioff, marked by the $390 million acquisition of RelateIQ and the 2016 launch of Einstein, the company’s first foray into CRM-integrated machine learning.
  • 2024 (The Paradigm Shift): The industry landscape changed with the launch of Salesforce’s Agentforce platform in September 2024, branding AI as "digital labor" and setting an ambitious target of empowering one billion agents by the end of 2025.
  • 2025-2026 (Rapid Scaling): Veeva responded with a flurry of activity, launching its own AI agents for Vault CRM in December 2025. By early 2026, Veeva expanded its portfolio with the $100 million acquisition of Ostro, an AI brand-engagement firm, and the announcement of "Falcon," a new agentic platform for drug development.

Strategic Divergence: "Headless" vs. "Depth-Inside-App"

While both companies are targeting the same regulated markets, their architectural philosophies differ significantly. Salesforce is pushing a "headless" strategy. By exposing its platform’s APIs, data models, and workflows as Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, Salesforce allows customers to deploy their agents within whatever interface they choose—whether that is a proprietary dashboard or an external tool like Anthropic’s Claude.

"I was with a customer yesterday who has made a significant investment in Anthropic, and they are going to use our MCP service for Agentforce to bring all of those compliant workflows directly inside Claude," Ferraro noted.

In contrast, Veeva maintains a "depth-inside-the-app" posture. Their Vault AI Agents are designed to work natively within the Veeva ecosystem. This ensures that the agents operate strictly against Veeva’s validated data, documents, and workflows. For Veeva, the security of keeping the agentic labor contained within their specific environment is a key selling point for a risk-averse industry.

Data Points and Market Impact

The sheer scale of AI adoption is staggering. On its Q1 fiscal 2027 earnings call, Salesforce revealed that it had processed 28.6 trillion AI tokens—a 152% increase quarter-over-quarter. Agentforce itself has already reached an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $1.2 billion, signaling that the "digital labor" market is no longer speculative.

Salesforce claims that its agentic tools are significantly compressing deployment timelines. Smaller life sciences companies, often burdened by high consultancy costs during CRM implementations, have reportedly completed onboarding in as little as one month.

"You get one forward-deployed engineer, and they can do the work of five or 10 previously," Ferraro claimed. "Because they have tools like Claude Code or Codex, they can point those tools at the Salesforce platform to automate configuration tasks that previously required navigating through dozens of nested screens."

Official Responses and Industry Positioning

Both companies are acutely aware that they are operating in a highly regulated environment. In the pharmaceutical sector, the "black box" nature of traditional LLMs—which are prone to "hallucinations"—is a non-starter.

Salesforce is addressing this through "Agent Scripts," which enforce deterministic checks. These ensure that any action taken by an AI agent—such as emailing a physician—must adhere to strict regulatory templates and existing consent statuses.

Veeva is mirroring this focus on control. Their "Falcon" platform and the upcoming Vault "AI Tab" allow users to query data while respecting existing security permissions. Their acquisition of Ostro is particularly telling: the platform uses conversational AI to answer HCP questions using only Medical, Legal, and Regulatory (MLR)-approved content, effectively preventing the AI from "generating" new, potentially non-compliant medical claims.

Implications for the Future of Pharma

The shift toward agentic AI has profound implications for how pharmaceutical companies operate.

1. The Death of the "Manual" Workflow

The era of manual data entry and repetitive administrative tasks in clinical trials and commercial operations is coming to an end. Whether it is updating a patient’s status or drafting a regulatory filing, agents are poised to take over the "grunt work," allowing human employees to focus on high-level strategy and relationship building.

2. The Rise of Interoperability

Salesforce’s "headless" push suggests a future where AI agents act as the connective tissue between disparate software silos. If successful, this could break down the walls that have traditionally kept commercial, medical, and clinical data in separate "clouds."

3. The Compliance Paradox

The biggest hurdle remains the tension between the fluid, probabilistic nature of AI and the rigid, deterministic requirements of the FDA and other global regulators. Both Salesforce and Veeva are essentially building "guardrails" around these models. The winner of this market will likely be the company that can best demonstrate that its agents are not just efficient, but fundamentally incapable of breaking compliance rules.

Conclusion: A Two-Horse Race

As Salesforce and Veeva continue to iterate, the life sciences industry finds itself in a unique position of leverage. For the first time, pharma companies have two distinct, competing visions for the future of digital operations.

Salesforce offers the speed and flexibility of an open, ecosystem-agnostic approach, betting that the future lies in the "headless" integration of AI across any surface. Veeva offers the security and stability of a unified, industry-vertical ecosystem, betting that compliance and data depth are the only metrics that truly matter.

For the clients—Novartis, Moderna, and others—the competition is a welcome development. As Ferraro put it, "Everybody is using agents now." The challenge for the industry will be determining which architecture best supports the delicate balance of rapid innovation and uncompromising regulatory adherence. One thing is certain: the "digital labor" revolution has arrived, and it is here to stay.
