Illuminating the Shadows: The Global Effort to Defeat Metastatic Breast Cancer

NEW YORK, NY — As October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the familiar landscape of pink ribbons and campaigns for early detection often dominates the cultural conversation. However, for a specific and vulnerable community, this month represents a call to action for a different, more urgent reality. On October 13, National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the nonprofit organization METAvivor Research and Support will lead the seventh annual #LightUpMBC campaign—a global movement designed to illuminate the realities of Stage 4 breast cancer and raise critical funds for research that could eventually turn a terminal diagnosis into a manageable, long-term condition.

More than 325 landmarks across 20 countries, 195 cities, and all 50 U.S. states will shine in the colors of teal, green, and pink—the official colors of the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community—to honor those who have lost their lives and to stand in solidarity with those currently living with the disease.

The Reality of Stage 4: A Disease Without a Cure

Metastatic breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the original site in the breast to distant organs, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. Despite the progress made in oncology, MBC remains the only form of breast cancer that is considered incurable.

For many, the diagnosis is a sudden shock; for others, it is the devastating recurrence of an earlier-stage cancer that has returned years or even decades after the initial treatment. Unlike early-stage breast cancer, which is often treated with the goal of "cure" or long-term remission, MBC treatment is a lifelong marathon. Patients must navigate a perpetual cycle of therapies, scans, and interventions. Even when a treatment successfully keeps the disease "stable"—meaning scans show no evidence of disease—the underlying cancer remains, requiring constant vigilance and the eventual rotation of treatments as the cancer develops resistance to existing protocols.

The human cost is profound. According to recent data, an estimated 42,670 people in the United States are projected to die from breast cancer in 2026. This equates to approximately 117 lives lost every single day. These statistics underscore the critical, life-saving necessity of specialized research, which is exactly where METAvivor focuses its efforts.

A Chronology of Advocacy and Awareness

The #LightUpMBC campaign has its roots in a deeply personal mission. It began as the vision of Laura Inahara, who sought to honor the memory of her best friend, Jessica Moore, who passed away from metastatic breast cancer at the age of 36.

  • 2017: The movement began modestly, with the illumination of the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was the first landmark to be lit specifically for MBC awareness, setting a precedent for a global shift.
  • 2018–2022: The campaign gained momentum, expanding from local bridges and town halls to major international icons. The vision of illuminating one local landmark transformed into a decentralized, global network of support.
  • 2023–2025: As the campaign grew, it integrated a digital component: #LightUpMBC Live. This virtual event bridged the gap between physical landmarks and the patient community, providing a platform for voices that are often marginalized in broader breast cancer narratives.
  • October 13, 2026: The current campaign marks a new high-water mark for the organization, with over 325 landmarks participating. From the One World Trade Center in New York to the Ness Bridge in Scotland and the Mactan-Cebu Airport in the Philippines, the reach is now truly international.

Supporting Data: Why Targeted Research Matters

METAvivor stands apart from many other breast cancer organizations because it exclusively funds research for Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The organization utilizes a rigorous, two-tiered review process: projects are vetted by both scientific peers and patient advocates to ensure that the research is not only theoretically sound but also relevant to the quality-of-life concerns of those living with the disease.

The funding generated by #LightUpMBC has been transformative. To date, the campaign has raised over $2.7 million, directly fueling research grants that would otherwise go unfunded. This is vital because, historically, the vast majority of breast cancer research funding has been directed toward early detection and prevention. While those are crucial, the "Stage 4 gap" remains the primary cause of breast cancer mortality.

The research funded by METAvivor focuses on:

  • Overcoming Treatment Resistance: Developing new therapies for patients who have exhausted traditional lines of treatment.
  • Precision Medicine: Tailoring treatments based on the unique genetic makeup of a patient’s metastatic tumor.
  • Quality of Life: Minimizing the side effects of chronic, long-term chemotherapy and targeted therapies.

Voices of the Community: Official Responses

The leadership behind #LightUpMBC brings a level of lived experience that is rare in medical advocacy. Dr. Kelly Shanahan, the Board President of METAvivor, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2013. Reflecting on her journey, she notes that her survival has defied initial expectations.

"When I was diagnosed in 2013, I certainly didn’t think I’d still be here 13 years later," Dr. Shanahan says. "My hope and the hope of so many others lies in research. METAvivor-funded research is increasingly important because it targets the very thing that kills us. #LightUpMBC is the biggest contributor to this research, and it serves as a powerful way to bring us together as a community."

Laura Inahara, the founder of the campaign, views the event as a living legacy. "Jessica hoped to illuminate one local landmark," Inahara explains. "Today, her legacy helps families around the world shine a light for the people they love. It teaches patients with MBC how to advocate for themselves and has raised millions for critical research that gives us, and our families, more time."

Implications: The #LightUpMBC Live Event

The centerpiece of the awareness campaign is the #LightUpMBC Live broadcast, scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). Hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling—who has lived with MBC for 11 years—and Broadway performer and breast cancer survivor Kara Lindsay, the program is designed to be both an educational resource and a cultural tribute.

The livestream will feature:

  • Patient Narratives: Personal stories broadcast live from various illuminated landmarks around the globe.
  • Scientific Insights: Experts explaining the latest breakthroughs in MBC treatment and the hurdles that remain.
  • Musical Performances: A star-studded lineup including two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, Tony Award nominee Dorian Harewood, actress Christina Bianco, and singer-songwriter Cassandra Kubinski.

The broadcast will be available for free on the METAvivor YouTube channel and METAvivor’s Facebook Live, with additional streaming support through LiveOne.

Turning Awareness into Action

The success of the #LightUpMBC campaign serves as a reminder that advocacy is not just about awareness—it is about tangible, scientific progress. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the campaign and the live stream are dedicated to funding research.

As the sun sets on October 13, the sight of hundreds of landmarks glowing in teal, green, and pink will provide a visual representation of the solidarity of the MBC community. However, the true impact will be measured in the labs and clinical trials that follow.

For those who wish to support the mission, the organization encourages the public to visit www.lightupmbc.org to view a map of participating landmarks, find viewing links for the stream, and contribute to the research fund. By engaging with the campaign on social media—using the tags @LightUpMBC, #LightUpMBC, and #METAvivor—participants can help amplify the voices of those who are fighting for a future where Stage 4 cancer is no longer a terminal sentence, but a manageable condition.

In the words of the organizers, the goal is simple: to shine a light on the darkness of this disease until a cure is found, ensuring that the stories of those like Jessica Moore lead to a world where fewer families have to say goodbye too soon.
