Finding Pride in the Aftermath: How One Individual’s Journey Through Grief Redefined Community

For many, Pride Month is a vibrant spectacle of parades, rainbow flags, and public celebration. However, for Helen Lawson, the meaning of Pride has undergone a profound metamorphosis—one that shifted from the public expression of a thirty-one-year partnership to a quiet, internal discovery of self-identity and the necessity of human connection during life’s most desolate chapters.

Following the loss of their long-term partner, Wallace Greene, in 2024, Lawson found themselves navigating the isolating landscape of grief. Yet, through the support of the Shanti Project’s LGBTQ+ Aging and Abilities Support Network (LAASN), Lawson has not only managed to emerge from the darkness of isolation but has also embraced a new chapter as a non-binary individual. This is a story of resilience, the power of peer support, and the evolving nature of what it means to be proud.

A Love Story Built on Simple Moments

The narrative of Lawson and Greene began in 1992 in the most ordinary of settings: a local grocery store. It was a fleeting, silent encounter—a simple nod—that prompted Lawson to initiate a conversation. That small spark ignited a three-decade partnership defined by shared experiences, mutual companionship, and an active presence within the LGBTQ+ community.

For thirty-one years, the couple was a fixture in each other’s lives. They celebrated the milestones of progress, participated in Pride parades, and built a foundation of intimacy that most only dream of. "My partner of 31 years was my Pride," Lawson reflects. The partnership was the cornerstone of their identity, a tether to the world that provided both security and joy.

The Descent into Grief and the Discovery of Self

When Wallace Greene passed away in 2024, the impact on Lawson was cataclysmic. The void left by a partner of over three decades proved difficult to navigate. "Because of the prolonged grief, I became somewhat of a recluse," Lawson explains. "I felt very disconnected from Pride."

During this period of profound withdrawal, Lawson entered a period of deep introspection. It was within the silence of their grieving process that a new layer of their identity surfaced. Lawson began to understand that the labels they had lived with for years no longer encapsulated their full experience.

"In my grieving, I came out as non-binary, which was very liberating," Lawson says. Today, Lawson identifies as non-binary and uses he/they pronouns, though they continue to use the name Helen. This transition, occurring in the shadow of loss, highlights the often-overlooked reality that personal evolution does not stop at a certain age or after a significant life tragedy. Instead, the process of mourning can occasionally act as a catalyst for profound personal clarity.

The Role of Peer Support: The Shanti Intervention

The transition from isolation back into the world was not a solitary achievement. It was facilitated by the Shanti Project, an organization dedicated to providing emotional and practical support to people facing life-threatening illnesses, chronic health conditions, and the challenges of aging.

Lawson was connected with Danny, a Peer Support Volunteer with Shanti’s LAASN program. This relationship became a lifeline. "I don’t know if I could have made it without them," Lawson admits. "The volunteers always meet me where I am."

The "Presence" Model of Care

The support provided by Danny was not clinical or detached; it was grounded in the "presence" model of peer support. This meant showing up for the small, difficult moments that often go unacknowledged by traditional social services:

  • The Loss of a Companion: When Lawson and Greene’s cat, Bright Eyes—a companion of 12 years—had to be euthanized, Danny was there. He accompanied Lawson to the veterinarian’s office, providing a comforting presence by reading The Goodbye Book aloud.
  • Practical Assistance: Danny integrated into Lawson’s life, helping with household tasks and creating opportunities for engagement, such as visiting Christmas light displays.
  • The Second Chance: One of the most significant milestones in Lawson’s recovery was returning to a play that they and Wallace had once attended. Years ago, Lawson had been under the influence during the performance, leaving them with deep-seated regret. With Danny’s encouragement, they attended the production again.

"That experience was profound," Lawson says. "I was grateful to have a second chance. I felt deeply connected to Wallace. I wish I got to experience it with Wallace—but I’m grateful I got to share it with Danny."

Shifting Perspectives on Community

The relationship between Lawson and Danny has transcended the typical boundaries of a volunteer-client dynamic, evolving into a genuine, weekly friendship. For Lawson, this connection has sparked a wider reflection on the nature of community.

Lawson notes that their friendship with Danny—a straight man—has fostered a newfound appreciation for the importance of bridging demographic divides. In an era where political and social polarization can often feel absolute, the bond between Lawson and Danny serves as a case study in the efficacy of empathy. It proves that support systems within the LGBTQ+ community are strongest when they are inclusive and capable of facilitating genuine, human-to-human connection.

Official Perspective: The Necessity of LAASN

The LGBTQ+ Aging and Abilities Support Network (LAASN) is designed specifically to address the unique vulnerabilities of older LGBTQ+ adults. Many individuals in this demographic face higher rates of isolation, lack of family support, and systemic barriers to healthcare.

Shanti’s approach emphasizes that emotional support is just as critical as physical or medical assistance. By pairing volunteers with those who are grieving, the program prevents the health deterioration often associated with social isolation. As Lawson puts it, "Shanti adds life. Shanti provides life in situations that are very dark—but also moments that are light, that are fun, and that are carefree."

Implications: Pride as a Private Act of Resilience

The story of Helen Lawson forces a re-evaluation of what Pride signifies in the modern era. While public advocacy remains essential, the personal dimension of Pride—the right to define oneself, the right to grieve, and the right to find community at any stage of life—is equally vital.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Grief as a Catalyst: The loss of a partner can lead to periods of extreme isolation, but it can also serve as a space for radical self-discovery and the exploration of gender identity.
  2. The Power of Peer Support: Non-professional, empathetic volunteers play a crucial role in preventing the "recluse" cycle in aging populations.
  3. Redefining Connection: Community is not solely defined by shared identity groups; it is built through consistent, reliable presence and the sharing of life’s mundane and transformative moments.
  4. Aging with Pride: For LGBTQ+ seniors, Pride must include access to resources that support them through the specific, often painful transitions of aging and loss.

Conclusion

Today, Helen Lawson’s version of Pride is quieter than the parades of their youth, yet it is arguably more potent. It is a Pride rooted in the survival of the self, the honor of past love, and the courage to open one’s heart to new forms of companionship.

By finding the light within the dark, Lawson has demonstrated that community is not merely a collective of people with shared traits, but a tapestry of individuals who choose to stay by one another’s side when the world feels like it is falling apart. As Lawson continues to navigate life with he/they pronouns and a renewed sense of purpose, they serve as a reminder that the most profound act of Pride is simply to keep living, keep connecting, and keep evolving.
