Frisco, TX – In the often demanding world of public service, where personal lives can become intertwined with professional responsibilities, Shona’s story serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the paramount importance of proactive health management. A dedicated elected official in Frisco, Texas, Shona found her life irrevocably altered by a routine mammogram that revealed a Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). This diagnosis, while a deeply personal challenge, also presented a complex dilemma: how to navigate a serious health crisis while serving a community that had placed its trust in her. Her journey, now shared publicly, underscores the critical role of early detection, the profound impact of familial history, and the vital necessity of robust support systems for those facing breast cancer.

The Unforeseen Diagnosis: A Routine Becomes a Reckoning

For years, Shona had been a diligent advocate for her own health, consistently adhering to her annual mammogram appointments. This commitment was fueled not only by general medical recommendations but also by a deeply personal understanding of breast cancer’s devastating potential. Her mother, a courageous survivor of Stage 4 breast cancer, battled the disease for 17 years before passing away in 2022 – the very same year Shona received her own diagnosis.

"It’s incredible that she was able to live life pretty abundantly after her diagnosis," Shona reflects, her voice tinged with both remembrance and resolve. "When she was diagnosed, I was 35, my youngest child was 1, and immediately then, because of how aggressive her cancer was, I started routine mammograms annually."

This proactive approach, Shona emphasizes, was more than just a tick on a calendar. "It wasn’t just that I received a mammogram each year," she explains, "but that I had them consistently in the same month each year, which my doctor said was very important for creating that baseline of following what was going on in my body each year. Every January, I had a routine mammogram, which I firmly believe led to the early detection [of my breast cancer]." This consistent, year-over-year monitoring proved to be a critical factor, enabling the identification of the malignancy at its earliest, most treatable stage.

The revelation of the mass was, as she describes, "caught off guard." Despite her vigilance, the diagnosis of Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) meant that Shona, like one in eight women, was now facing the fight of her life. However, her role as an elected official introduced an additional layer of complexity. The public nature of her position necessitated difficult decisions about the extent to which she would share her personal health battle and how she would prioritize her energy and focus.

A Mother’s Legacy and the Power of Consistent Screening

Shona’s mother’s long and often arduous journey with breast cancer profoundly shaped Shona’s approach to her own health. The experience instilled in her a deep appreciation for life and a keen awareness of the disease’s insidious nature. "When she was diagnosed, I was 35, my youngest child was 1, and immediately then, because of how aggressive her cancer was, I started routine mammograms annually," Shona recounts. This decision, made out of love and a desire to protect her young family, ultimately became a cornerstone of her own survival.

The importance of consistent screening cannot be overstated. Shona’s insistence on having her mammograms at the same time each year allowed her medical team to establish a clear baseline. This consistent monitoring is crucial for identifying subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. "Every January, I had a routine mammogram, which I firmly believe led to the early detection [of my breast cancer]," she states with conviction. This anecdote serves as a powerful reminder that adherence to recommended screening schedules, particularly for individuals with a family history, is an essential tool in the fight against breast cancer.

Navigating the Public Arena: Prioritizing Family and Self

The intersection of Shona’s breast cancer diagnosis and her public service career presented a unique set of challenges. As an elected official facing an upcoming reelection campaign, she had to make critical decisions about her priorities. The pressure to maintain a public persona while grappling with a serious health crisis was immense.

"I was an elected official in our community when I was diagnosed, and I was up for reelection," Shona shares. "A lot of decisions had to be made about what my next steps were going to look like." Ultimately, the profound realization of her primary roles as a wife and mother guided her decision-making.

"My husband looked at me one day and said, ‘I need you to fight cancer as hard as you’re going to campaign,’" she recalls. This poignant statement resonated deeply, prompting Shona to re-evaluate her commitments. "And for me, when I looked at my family, I realized my breast cancer fight needed to be the campaign I focused on. I knew that other people could do things out in our community. But no one else could be my husband’s wife. No one else could be my children’s mother. And so I made the choice to step back and focus on my cancer journey."

This courageous decision to temporarily step back from her public duties in order to prioritize her health and family underscores the often-overlooked personal sacrifices that individuals, particularly women in leadership positions, may face when confronted with serious illness. It highlights the delicate balance between public responsibility and the fundamental need for self-preservation.

The Power of Vulnerability: Inspiring Others Through Openness

Despite the personal challenges and the need to set boundaries, Shona made a conscious choice to be open about her diagnosis and treatment. This decision was rooted in a desire to support and empower other women facing similar battles.

"I made the choice to be public about the hard things as well as the positive things," Shona explains. "We want to be positive about everything, but for a woman who’s in the middle of breast cancer, the fear and the emotional drain is sometimes so overwhelming that I think it helps to be honest: I feel that, too. And if I’m feeling that, and you’re feeling that, then we can feel it together, and we don’t feel as abnormal in a very weird and abnormal journey."

This transparency, even in the face of vulnerability, had a profound impact. Shona began receiving messages from other women who, inspired by her candor, were motivated to schedule their own mammograms. "At that point, I realized there was a message to be shared," she states. "If it saves just one woman’s life, then that means something. It enabled me to continue sharing even the emotionally difficult parts of my journey."

Her message of shared struggle and solidarity continues to resonate: "I’ve struggled, too. And what you’re feeling is legitimate, and it’s real, and it’s okay. So let’s walk it together." This empathetic approach fosters a sense of community and shared experience, diminishing the isolation that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis.

Empowering Advice: A Survivor’s Wisdom

As a breast cancer survivor, Shona has channeled her experiences into offering invaluable advice to others navigating the complexities of the disease, from the initial stages of screening to life beyond treatment.

Addressing the Fear of Screening: Confronting "Scanxiety"

The apprehension surrounding mammograms, often termed "scanxiety," is a common hurdle for many women, particularly those with a family history of breast cancer. Shona’s advice for overcoming this fear is rooted in direct experience: "I think the best way to get over the fear is to go through the process and get the mammograms. The very first mammogram I had, I was scared to death. But once I went through the first mammogram, I knew what to expect and knew what would be coming. The best way for me and my sisters to combat our fears and what we might experience was to hit it head-on. And the only way to do that was to get the screening done." Her words emphasize that facing the fear directly, by undergoing the screening, is often the most effective path to alleviating it.

Genetic Testing: A Layer of Informed Decision-Making

Shona’s family history prompted her and her sisters to undergo genetic testing. While their results did not reveal a hereditary link to breast cancer, Shona remains a staunch advocate for the procedure. "I think genetic testing provides one more layer of information, one more piece of knowledge," she explains. "The more knowledge you have, the more you can make decisions about what you need to do about your own health now, 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now. Take the opportunity, whatever information you can get about your own health. I think it’s so vitally important. And if you would do it for your kids, you should do it for yourself." This underscores the proactive role genetic testing can play in personalized health management and risk assessment.

The Indispensable Value of Support Systems

The aftermath of treatment often presents its own set of emotional and physical challenges. Shona candidly shares her own experience of feeling guilt for not immediately feeling like a "warrior" post-treatment. Seeking solace and understanding, she joined a National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) support group.

"Once I walked into that [support group] room, and realized that the ladies sitting around that table automatically knew what I was feeling and experiencing, and understood it and validated it, it didn’t just give me the ability to feel it, it gave me the ability to work through it in a hopeful and appropriate way that allowed me to process it better," she says. "Support groups are an incredible way to lean on each other in the middle of it, after it, and beyond your journey in a way that I don’t think you find in other places." This highlights the profound therapeutic benefits of peer support in navigating the often-isolating experience of survivorship.

A Lifelong Commitment to Advocacy and Empowerment

Shona’s journey has solidified her commitment to advocating for others. She views her continued work in empowering and supporting women as an integral part of her own healing and purpose. "If I can’t advocate for other women, then my journey is a little bit of a waste. If I can’t give back to someone else, I’m losing something," she asserts.

Her advocacy extends to encouraging women to assert their needs and boundaries. "You have the right to tell people what you need from them. You have the right to tell people what you don’t need from them. And you have the right to question things," she advises. This empowers individuals to take an active role in their care and well-being.

Shona also passionately encourages women diagnosed with breast cancer to reach out to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "What do you do when you first get that phone call that you have breast cancer? I would say you reach out to NBCF," she recommends. "They’re going to be able to help you in the moment, right now, find the resources you need to get through those first stages of the journey, the middle stages of the journey, and the final stages as well."

The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission of "Helping Women Now" is exemplified through its provision of resources such as HOPE Kits, patient navigators to guide individuals through the complex healthcare system, support groups, and educational materials. Shona’s personal testimony underscores the tangible impact these services can have on individuals navigating the multifaceted challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis and survivorship. Her story is a powerful reminder that early detection, informed decision-making, and unwavering support are critical pillars in the ongoing fight against breast cancer, empowering individuals to not only survive but to thrive.
