The Timeless Wisdom of Bharadvajasana: A Deep Dive into the Seated Twist

Originally published in the November-December 1982 issue of Yoga Journal, this archival feature explores the anatomy, philosophy, and precise execution of one of yoga’s most foundational spinal movements.

The Essence of Bharadvajasana: A Foundation for Mobility

Named after the revered sage Bharadvaja—a character from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata—the Seated Twist, or Bharadvajasana, stands as a cornerstone of beginning-level yoga practice. While often categorized as a "beginner" pose, its utility spans the entire spectrum of practitioners, from those seeking increased suppleness to older students and women navigating the unique physiological requirements of pregnancy.

At its core, the Seated Twist is a therapeutic intervention for the spine. Twisting asanas function by gently stretching the ligaments that bind the vertebrae together. This mechanical elongation facilitates a greater range of motion across all vertebral segments, effectively "unlocking" the spine. By eliminating minor areas of tightness, the practitioner can approach more complex asanas with freedom, while simultaneously correcting chronic postural imbalances that lead to fatigue and discomfort.

A Chronological Perspective: From Ancient Epic to Modern Practice

The evolution of yoga in the West owes much to the preservation of foundational texts and the rigorous methodology established by masters like B.K.S. Iyengar. In 1982, Yoga Journal highlighted the Seated Twist not as a mere exercise, but as a practice rooted in deep anatomical awareness and philosophical surrender.

The practice of Bharadvajasana has remained remarkably consistent over the decades. It serves as a reminder that the "goal" of yoga is not to force the body into a desired shape, but to peel away the physical and mental blockages that prevent the body from expressing its inherent, natural alignment.

Anatomical Integrity: Protecting the Sacroiliac Joint

One of the most critical aspects of practicing the Seated Twist is understanding the "base" of the movement. For a twist to be safe and effective, the pelvis must be kept level.

The Mechanics of the Pelvic Girdle

The pelvis serves as the vital communicating link between the trunk (the spine) and the lower extremities. It connects to the hip joints at its base and the sacrum—the triangular bone at the base of the spine—at its upper end. When a student enters a twist without allowing the pelvis to move in harmony with the spine, they risk creating dangerous torque at the sacroiliac (S-I) joint.

The S-I joint is notoriously vulnerable because it lacks the deep muscular and ligamentous support found in other major joints. This is particularly relevant for women; biologically, the female S-I joint is shallower and less stable than the male counterpart. Furthermore, hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation can lead to increased laxity in these ligaments. By ensuring that the pelvis is allowed to rotate as a continuation of the spinal column—rather than keeping it "frozen" in place—the practitioner effectively mitigates the risk of strain and injury.

The Spine and Its Girdles

The health of the spine is inextricably linked to the freedom of the pelvic and shoulder girdles. A slouching posture is often the result of tension in the shoulders, which in turn causes the spine to collapse. Conversely, tightness in the hips can induce an exaggerated inward curve of the lower back, known as lordosis. When the shoulder and hip joints are properly opened, the spine is liberated to "spring" into its natural, gently curving shape. This principle is universal across all twisting asanas.

The Philosophy of Release: Beyond Effort

In contemporary fitness culture, there is a tendency to view yoga as an artificial discipline—a process of forcing an unwilling body into a specific mold. However, the traditional yogic perspective argues the opposite. True discipline in yoga is not found in the act of shaping, but in the act of releasing.

The philosophy suggests that the "Self" is already perfect; the practice of asana serves only to remove the roadblocks—the physical tension and egoic resistance—that obscure this reality. The concept of asmita, or egoism, is viewed as one of the greatest obstacles to progress. When a student approaches a pose with brute force, they are acting from a place of ego, attempting to "change" what is already whole.

Instead, the practitioner should cultivate patience. Through persistence, the asana begins to express itself through the body, which, when properly aligned, naturally moves toward harmony. This is the physical expression of surrender, which is not synonymous with weakness, but with a refined, intentional softness.

Practical Guidance: How to Execute Bharadvajasana

To practice the Seated Twist with precision, follow these steps while maintaining a focus on rhythmic exhalation.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preparation: Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight in front of you.
  2. The Base: Exhale and bend your knees, bringing your feet to the left side of your buttocks. Your left ankle should nestle comfortably into the arch of your right foot.
  3. Grounding: Ensure both buttocks remain firmly on the floor. If this is challenging, place a folded mat or blanket under the right buttock to ensure stability.
  4. The Arm Movement: Exhale as you lift your right arm straight up toward the ceiling. Keep the arm extended, then bring it around your back to catch the left arm just above the elbow. Keep your right shoulder rotated outward rather than letting it collapse forward toward your chest.
  5. The Twist: Reach your left arm across your body, placing the palm down and hooking it under the outside of your right knee. As you begin the twist from the base of the spine, allow the left side of the pelvis to slide forward slightly.
  6. Refinement: Turn your head with the spine, or look over the left shoulder, ensuring your eyes remain parallel to the horizon. Hold for several breaths, focusing on the exhalation. Repeat on the opposite side.

Implications for Teachers and Students

For instructors, the Seated Twist offers a versatile tool for students of all abilities. The use of a wall as a prop is particularly effective for beginners. By sitting with shoulders at a right angle to a wall, a student can use the wall as a lever to create gentle, controlled pressure. This is an excellent way to target the thoracic spine—the mid-back area—where tension and immobility are most prevalent.

For women in the later stages of pregnancy, this wall-assisted version is invaluable. It provides the leverage necessary to facilitate a deep twist without the physical constraint of placing a hand across an abdomen, ensuring the practice remains both safe and accessible.

Conclusion: The Harmony of Breath and Essence

The Seated Twist, when approached with the correct attitude, is a meditative practice. The mental expression of surrender is the exhalation. By timing the movement of the spine with the breath, the practitioner allows the body-mind complex to adjust naturally.

As we revisit these archives from 1982, the message remains as relevant as ever: we do not practice yoga to change who we are, but to become more authentically ourselves. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a newcomer to the mat, the invitation of Bharadvajasana is to let go of the force, embrace the softness, and allow the body to express its natural, inherent beauty.
